U.Va. Researchers Receive $1M to Study Connection between Fine Motor and Math Skills

October 27, 2009 — The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia has received a $1 million federal stimulus grant distributed by the National Institutes of Health. Principal research scientist David Grissmer and senior scientist Andrew Mashburn will study the connection between fine motor skills and mathematical skills. "Recent research studies of kindergarteners show that the most powerful predictor of later school success – in both reading and math – is a child's early understanding of math concepts," Mashburn said.  More.

U.S. Education Secretary Gives 'Call to Teach' Address to Curry Students

October 12, 2009 — U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan came to the University of Virginia on Friday to deliver the first of three addresses he's giving this month to recruit an "army of great new teachers" to close the achievement gap among students and help ensure the country's longAdd-term prosperity. "I can think of no better place to start recruiting teachers than in Thomas Jefferson's hallowed halls," he told the capacity crowd, made up mostly of U.Va. teacher-education students, gathered in the Dome Room of the Rotunda. Duncan said he was addressing not only them, but also college students, professionals, military veterans and retirees who might consider teaching." More.

Curry welcomes the new CLIC Coordinator!

hamid_arsalanCurry welcomes Hamid Arsalan as the new CLIC Coordinator. Hamid will work with the Librarian in Residence, Ed Council, and Curry students and faculty to facilitate transition of the Education Library from a physical to a digital library. Throughout the year, Hamid will help implement the Curry Innovation Collaboration Grants program that has been provided for UVA faculty and students. Hamid Arsalan is a first year graduate student in the accelerated MPP program at the Frank Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy. He is also a part time graduate student at the Center for Justice & Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University where he studies Conflict Resolution. Hamid is a tea lover, a kite runner, and an avid reader. U.Va. Curry School Co-sponsors 'Educating World Citizens' Conference, Featuring the Dalai Lama

October 6, 2009—The University of Virginia's Curry School of Education is a co-sponsor of the Mind and Life XIX conference (www.educatingworldcitizens.org) on "Educating World Citizens for the 21st Century," to be held Oct. 8 and 9 in Washington, D.C. The conference features the Dalai Lama, along with leading educators, scientists and policymakers worldwide. Conference organizers are seeking to promote research that explores the best ways to integrate emotional, intellectual and social learning in the classroom. More.

Curry Plays Active Role in the Community

October 2, 2009 — Hundreds of University of Virginia employees recently participated in the annual United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring, an event that assists many organizations throughout Charlottesville and the surrounding areas.  However, the Day of Caring is but one day that U.Va reaches out to the broader community.  At the Curry School of Education, students and faculty serve as resources and support for a variety of initiatives in the community.  Connection to the community is a core principal for the Curry School. “The core elements of Curry’s community engagement are student learning and the application of new knowledge, faculty advancement in both scholarship and teaching, and an appreciation of each community’s culture and unique needs,” said Dean Robert Pianta. U.Va. Professor Partners with National Geographic on K-2 Science Curriculum

September 30, 2009 — An innovative curriculum co-written by Randy Bell, an associate professor in the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education, introduces modular science units, sets of easy readers, colorful wildlife and nature photography, inquiry projects and literacy skills to science learning in kindergarten through second grade. Bell worked with a six-member team of authors from the fields of science education and literacy, each invited by National Geographic to develop its first core science program.  More.

Curry Web Tool Being Used on Smithsonian Site by Teachers and Students to Create Short Movies

September 1, 2009 — How are an elementary school student, the Dust Bowl era, the University of Virginia and the Smithsonian Institute's American Art Museum connected? All play a role in "Picturing the 1930s," a new educational Web site created by the museum in collaboration with U.Va. and launched publicly today. Users of the site, many of whom are teachers and secondary school students, explore the 1930s through paintings, artist memorabilia, historical documents, newsreels, period photographs, music and video in a virtual movie theater. Curry Graduate Deborah Chu Receives Fulbright Award

Aug. 11, 2009 - Deborah N. Chu, a May graduate of the University of Virginia, has been awarded a Fulbright http://fulbright.state.gov U.S. Student Scholarship to Taiwan, where she will teach English as a foreign language. "When I received the award I was ecstatic, because it gives me the opportunity to teach, live abroad and improve my language skills," said Chu, who earned a bachelor of arts degree in American studies from the College of Arts & Sciences and a master of teaching degree from the Curry School of Education. "With my background in education, I hope the experience teaching in Taiwan will give me a more global perspective and better understanding of the differences in various public educational systems." Curry Gets Nearly $500,000 to Develop Low-Cost Tools that Assess Effective Teaching

Aug. 10, 2009 — The University of Virginia's Curry School of Education has received a three-year grant worth nearly $500,000 from the William T. Grant and Spencer foundations to develop low-cost tools to measure effective teaching in classrooms. Curry researchers Jason Downer, Bridget Hamre and Megan Stuhlman will develop these new tools that use student, principal and supervisor surveys to assess teacher-student interactions. More.

Curry Researchers Receive $4.9M Grant to Study 'Core Knowledge' in Charter Schools

Aug. 7, 2009 — David W. Grissmer and Thomas G. White, researchers at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education, have received a $4.9 million grant to evaluate the effectiveness of the "Core Knowledge" curriculum in 18 charter elementary schools in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Education is also participating. The five-year grant is being funded by the Institute for Educational Science, part of the U.S. Department of Education. More.
